From Healthcare To Self-Care

One Nurse’s Perspective During This Current Health Crisis

I am sitting at my kitchen table today as I write. I am usually settled in along with the creative buzz of my favorite coffee shop among the students, newspaper readers and friends catching up over a cappuccino and a pastry.

Not today.

I am choosing to work from home in response to the messages I am hearing about social distancing, self-isolation and the risk of spreading or contracting COVID-19.

Just a few weeks ago these terms were not even a part of my vocabulary. I knew about the Corona virus, but I was not aware of the specific strain or how virulent it was. I was washing my hands regularly and I refrained from shaking hands or hugging anyone other than my family.

I am experiencing a new set of circumstances today.

I released my first book at the end of February and was planning a Book Signing Party for my friends and family members. I was excited to be celebrating the birth of my book, a dream come true!

Yesterday I canceled the party.

I didn’t want to put anyone at risk as I envisioned a group of fifty people meeting in an intimate setting. As much as I love to celebrate, I knew that it was too risky. I felt strong having made this decision, and at the same time I felt vulnerable as I announced this change in plans. The response was so much more supportive than I ever imagined. My friends thanked me for taking leadership in this way and acknowledged me for my courage.
